E-Newsletter

June 2007

Welcome to Our Newsletter!

FamilySome of you who receive this are members of our Friends of the Library (FOL) and already receive a quarterly newsletter in the mail. The FOL newsletter is a report about current library events, new services, changes in staff, and Friends of the Library activities.

This newsletter is different – while it will include information about programs and events, we are also going to include information about things we think might interest you. Sometimes we may highlight something in our collection. Sometimes we may tell you about some really handy websites. And we will always have some book reviews – after all, books are still a major part of our service and we KNOW there are readers still lurking out there!

If you’ve received this newsletter and do not want to continue to receive it, or if this was forwarded to you by a friend and you’d like to be on our email list, please let us know by sending a message to kptlib@wrlibrary.org. We plan on sending this quarterly. And don’t forget to visit our website www.kingsportlibrary.org.

Noteworthy News

Catolog PartnershipOur online catalog now contains not only the catalogs of  all the public libraries in the Watauga Regional Library System - Carter County, Unicoi County, Greene County, Johnson County, Sullivan County (including Kingsport Public Library), and Washington County (including Johnson City Public Library), but the really BIG news is our online catalog now includes the holdings of the Bristol Public Library, East Tennessee State University Library, the Quillen Medical Library and Northeast State Tech Library. The courier service has been expanded to include these locations – so if you need a book they have at ETSU, you can place the hold request and a courier will bring that book to the Kingsport Public Library and we’ll give you a call to pick it up. You will now have over 1.8 MILLION library items available to you through our online catalog consortia and courier system – the ONLY one like this in the state. Just one more reason it’s good to live in East Tennessee.

The catalog has also changed in appearance and functionality. When you go to the catalog now, you’ll see a more “amazon-like” webpage. And you can still search all the libraries at one time, or only the Kingsport Public Library. If you search the Kingsport Public Library, you can search all of our collection at one time, or search only our children’s collection, genealogy collection or archives collection.

Book Bites

Reviews by Danny Bartlett

The Highly Effective Detective by Rick Yancey
Teddy Ruzak decides to open a detective agency in Knoxville, TN. Although his first case (finding out who ran over some baby ducks) seems rather flimsy, a murder ensues and Teddy is in the thick of it, despite the fact that his detecting skills seem minimal at best. Some interesting secondary characters, such as a waitress-turned secretary who misses lots of work and an old woman who confesses to crimes she reads about in the newspaper, add to the overall enjoyment of this first novel in what will hopefully become a series. I was initially drawn to this novel because the Knoxville setting is my hometown, but I will go back for seconds and thirds if Teddy Ruzak has further detecting adventures.

Lost and Found: A Novel by Carolyn Parkhurst
Teams competing on a reality TV show entitled “Lost and Found” (think “Amazing Race”) find themselves not only competing against the other teams for the top prize, but also struggling to understand and get along with their own teammates. Includes lots of interesting information about how the reality shows work, including the idea that some teams are picked specifically because of the potential for conflict between the team members during the course of the race. Well written and enjoyable

Multiple Choice by Claire Cook
A mother and her teenage daughter are simultaneously attending different colleges but end up working together at the same radio station, much to the daughter’s dismay. A pleasant, humorous story told from the point of view of the 40-something mom, who’s trying to decide what she wants to do with her life, now that her kids are almost grown. Several interesting secondary characters are well-drawn and add to the overall enjoyment of the story.

Cruciverbalism: A Crossword Fanatic’s Guide to Life in the Grid… by Stanley Newman
Stanley Newman, crossword editor for “Newsday” newspaper, describes how he first became interested in crosswords and how he eventually made crosswords his career. He also provides many tips for solving crosswords more proficiently. The book is well written and especially useful for novice solvers who may be interested in how puzzles are constructed and how to increase their enjoyment of crosswords.
